The gums are just as important to oral health as the teeth. The pink soft tissue covers tooth roots and helps support and protect the teeth. If you suffer from periodontal disease, dentist in Calgary Dr. Gordon Chee provides several forms of gum therapy. He can also offer guided recommendations to help you care for your gums.
Just like healthy teeth, the best type of gum treatment is preventative care. This includes:
- Brushing twice a day
- Flossing every day
- Rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash
- Eating a diet rich in calcium
- Avoiding excessive amounts of candy and other foods with high quantities of sugar
- Not using tobacco products
When you brush your teeth, the technique you use is as important to your gum health as the frequency. Always use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Hold the brush at an angle and use short, gentle strokes.
Applying too much force when you brush and using a harsh scrubbing motion can result in gum recession. When gum tissue recedes, the tooth root becomes visible and small pockets form at the gum line, leaving an opening for the buildup of harmful bacteria.
Visiting your dentist in Calgary the recommended two times a year will also help you maintain good gum health. Dr. Chee will assess not only how well you care for your teeth and gums at these appointments but review family history, medications you take, chronic conditions and other issues that could increase your risk for gum disease.
