The three main ways of treating sleep apnea are:
- Nighttime dental appliance
- CPAP machine
- Lifestyle changes
Lifestyle changes that may alleviate your snoring problems and sleep apnea include:
- Losing weight
- Quitting smoking
- Avoiding alcohol and caffeine before bed
- Increasing physical activity
Dental appliances can be an effective treatment for snoring, as well as mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea.
A dental appliance is worn in your mouth while you sleep. It fits over your teeth. By holding your jaw and tongue forward, the dental appliance prevents your throat and mouth tissues from collapsing into your airway, leaving your airway clear for the flow of oxygen.
A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine can keep your airway open with a constant stream of air.
Although CPAP has shown to be an effective sleep apnea treatment, some patients find the mask cumbersome and uncomfortable. For some people, a dental appliance can be a good CPAP alternative.
A dental appliance isn't right for every sleep apnea patient, but our experienced dentists can work with your doctor to determine if it is right for you.
